Everything you need to know about Civic Walking, getting involved, and supporting voter engagement in your community.

About Civic Walking & Our Shared Mission

Civic Walking combines grassroots community outreach with neighborhood walks to engage voters in a friendly and supportive face-to-face environment. Volunteers walk local neighborhoods, share nonpartisan voting resources, and help neighbors get registered and prepared for upcoming elections.

No. We are a strictly nonpartisan initiative. Our sole mission is to boost voter participation, build community connections, and ensure every eligible voter has the information they need to cast their ballot.

Civic the Voting Hound is our nonpartisan voter engagement mascot! Civic helps lead the march to the polls, bringing a friendly, accessible face to civic action and community walking events.

Getting Involved & Walking

Go to civicwalking.com and register as a Civic Walker and join your zip code team. Every neighborhood across America has teams, and yours needs you. No experience required — just a pair of shoes and a belief in democracy. Enter your zip code to join others doing the same in your neighborhood.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water! You are free to purchase a T-Shirt for you and your dog or a badge from our online store or just wear comfortable walking clothes.

Not at all. We provide brief online orientations and simple walkthrough guides so anyone can confidently join a neighborhood walk.

Yes! This should be a social experience that brings people in your community together.

Tracking Your Steps

Your iPhone tracks steps automatically using the built-in Health app — no extra setup needed. Open the Health app (the white icon with a red heart), tap Browse at the bottom, then select Activity and tap Steps. You'll see your daily step count right there. Make sure your phone is with you while you walk!

Most Android phones include a built-in step counter. On Samsung devices, open the Samsung Health app and tap Steps on the dashboard. On Google Pixel and other Android phones, download Google Fit from the Play Store — it uses your phone's motion sensor to count steps automatically. Some phones also show steps directly in the Google Fit widget on your home screen.

Yes! Several free apps work great for step tracking: Pacer (iOS & Android) is popular and easy to use; Google Fit (Android) is built into many phones; Apple Health (iPhone) is pre-installed and always running in the background; and MapMyWalk (iOS & Android) tracks both steps and your walking route. Any of these will give you an accurate step count to log on Civic Walking.

No problem! You can pick up an inexpensive pedometer — we even sell one in our shop. Clip it to your waistband at the start of your walk and it counts every step automatically. At the end of your walk, just note the number and log it on the site.
